Deontay Wilder’s Mother, Deborah, Urges Him to Retire: “You Helped Bring Back Boxing in the US; Now It’s Time to Enjoy Life

Deontay Wilder, one of the most dominant heavyweight boxers in recent history, is being urged by his mother, Deborah, to hang up his gloves and step away from the ring. Deborah Wilder made an emotional appeal to her son, suggesting that he has done enough for the sport and that it’s time for him to focus on enjoying life beyond boxing.

In an interview with USA Today Sports, Deborah shared the heartfelt message she sent to her son. “I texted him and said, ‘Son, we’re having a party for you. You gave us the best boxing in the USA when boxing was dead. You’ve gotten older. You’ve run your course in your journey. It’s time to celebrate,” she revealed.

Wilder, known for his devastating knockout power, has been credited by many, including his mother, for revitalizing the heavyweight division in the United States. “He brought back boxing to the USA, and we enjoyed all those knockouts. I taped them, and I’m going to look back at them. We’re going to laugh, we’re going to cry. But we’re going to be happy,” Deborah added, emphasizing the joy and pride his career has brought to his family and fans.

Deborah’s plea is not just about celebrating the past but also about securing a happy and fulfilling future for her son. “Enjoy your life now,” she advised. “Teach other young men how to become a champion.” Her words reflect a desire to see Deontay transition from being a fighter in the ring to a mentor outside of it, helping to shape the next generation of champions.

As Wilder contemplates his future, his mother’s message serves as a poignant reminder of the legacy he has already cemented and the importance of cherishing the life he has built. Whether or not Wilder decides to retire, the impact he has had on boxing—and on those who love him—will be remembered for years to come.
