A heartbreaking final photo of two loving grandparents has been shared on social media, showing their desperate attempts to stay safe from raging floodwaters in North Carolina.
Like so many families in the US right now, Megan Drye – along with her parents and seven-year-old son, Micah – were forced to find safety as raging floodwaters surrounded their Asheville home.
The town is one of many in the southeast of the US that has been battered by Hurricane Helene.
Along with her parents – who were in their 70s – and son, mom Megan climbed to safety on the roof of their home, per the Daily Mail.
Taking to Facebook to share the family’s plight, Megan’s sister – Jessica Drye Turner – shared images of her loved ones trapped on the roof, explaining how they were “watching 18 wheelers and cars floating by” in the devastating floods.
One image showed the grandparents wearing ordinary clothes and surrounded by blankets.
Agonizingly, shortly after the photo was taken, the roof collapsed and Megan’s parents and young Micah drowned in the floodwaters.
Megan survived after becoming “wedged”.
“I have never felt this kind of loss, devastation, and aching of my spirit. I cry out to my Lord,” Micah’s aunt Jessica wrote on Facebook.
In an update, Jessica revealed that she was finally able to locate Megan. Micah’s body was later found a quarter of a mile away.
Megan’s other sister, Heather, has since launched a GoFundMe for the grieving family.
“For Megan Drye, our miracle, who has lived a mother’s worst nightmare,” the page description states. “She has survived the unimaginable and lost absolutely everything. The support of others will carry her and encourage her to keep taking one breath, one step, and one day at a time.
“We are living in the hope and peace that they are with Jesus and we will see our parents and Micah again one day.”
As of this writing, more than $66,000 has been raised for the heartbroken mother.
CBS News has confirmed that more than 130 people have died across multiple states as a result of Hurricane Helene, with countless more being left displaced and without shelter.
President Biden has added that 600 people remain unaccounted for at this time, as many areas have been left with means of communication.
“God willing they’re alive, but there’s no way to contact them,” Biden told reporters on Monday.
The White House has confirmed that more than 3,500 federal response personnel have been deployed to the area.
